The Fellowship of the Talisman , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 671min
A strange assortment of humans and otherworldly beings joins a young soldier of God on his perilous quest through an alternate, technology-free reality ruled by an all-powerful Evil. In an alternate world where the Dark Ages never ended, "the Evil" that arises every 500 years has prevented all manner of technological advancement, even well into the 20th century. The son of a powerful English noble, young Duncan Standish has always longed to be a soldier of the Lord, and now he's been offered a rare opportunity to fulfill his dream. Entrusted with the delivery of an ancient manuscript - purported to be irrefutable evidence of the existence of Jesus Christ - to a noted Oxenford scholar, Duncan must journey many perilous miles in the company of a motley group of fellow travelers, including a goblin, a ghost, and other magical and nonmagical companions. But the road they traverse together is fraught with terrible trials that would test even the most devout, for the Evil is strong in this place of dark wonders. Multiple Hugo, Nebula, and Locus Award winner and SFWA Grand Master Clifford D. Simak moves easily from science fiction to quest fantasy in this enthralling tale of magic, peril, and discovery on an Earth that never was. Rich in color, thrills, and wild invention, and populated by a highly original and unforgettable cast of characters, Fellowship of the Talisman showcases the author's peerless storytelling skills, demonstrating once again that the great Simak had few equals in the realm of 20th-century speculative fiction. ungekürzt. Psychic Reprieve: Deception and Reality , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 567min
R.C. is a rising star in baseball, until his world comes crashing down. Raised by his grandparents, Raunold Choquet has one dream in life, to play ball. When a hazing incident goes astray, he finds out that justice is not always blind. Reality sets in when he is attacked in prison. Awakening from a coma with piercing headaches and vivid dreams, he is left to sort out what is real, and what is not. Psychic Reprieve: Deception & Reality introduces us to a group of unlikely friends: a well-liked college baseball player, a disgraced Chicago police sergeant, and a folksy identify thief, as they seek to cash in on one of the trio’s clairvoyant abilities. As their plan unfolds, the lines between deception and reality blur as the motivation for financial gain clashes with conscience, patriotism, and personal responsibility. Purported psychics use their talents — real or perceived — to provide a service and earn an income. In this particular line of work, scammers and snake oil salesmen sometimes move about like thieves in the night. Realists see psychic readings as a pricy form of entertainment. To those in search of inner peace, however, the hopes of bringing a loved one’s killer to justice or communicating with a relative on 'the other side' can make them an easy mark for brazen charlatans. Mitchell Nevin’s latest novel searches the shadowy expanses occupied by serial killers, cold-blooded terrorists, challenged detectives, troubled loved ones, and a gifted young man on a quest to mend his tattered reputation. ungekürzt. Life in the Fish Bowl: The True Story of How a White Cop Infiltrated and Took Down 41 of the Nation's Most Notorious Crips , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 326min
Tegan Broadwater was the consummate outside insider. Pretending to be a high-end cocaine dealer, he infiltrated the deadly Crip street gang, won their trust, and embarked on a mission to put them away. Ultimately it became a dangerous cat-and-mouse game between two men: Tegan, the undercover, and M.D., the cagey drug lord with a street-level MBA. Only one of them would be left standing. Life in the Fish Bowl is Broadwater's first-person journey from green patrol cop to gangster's friend to Crip buster, loaded with action and inside information. It's also a fascinating eyewitness account of clotted police bureaucracy, hierarchical thug life, and the hazy netherworld of a man who had to move through both of them. This is an intimate, unflinching, behind-the-lines story of one man's time in the war on drugs and gangs, his surprising relationships and emotional attachment toward the ones he sought to stop, and his descent into a life that most people can't imagine. Tegan Broadwater came out on the other end, a year and a half later, a changed man. He also learned a few things. The purported war on drugs is still futile, gang life and the violence associated with it can be thwarted, and there is a dire need for strategically mentoring the children who become inadvertent victims in these operations. Breaking the cycle of violence, removing of the acceptance of young, urban youth from having multiple children without a life plan, and mentoring children of incarcerated parents is the best place to start a true war against gang and drug violence on our American streets. ungekürzt. The Demosthenes Club: A Bertrand McAbee Mystery , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 587min
Cynthia Power is found dead in her garage. The cops declare it a clear case of suicide over the objection of her psychiatrist, who asks PI Bertrand McAbee to investigate. As he does, he becomes aware of a high school group called the Demosthenes Club that was formed in 1967. Cynthia was a member, along with seven other students. They were extremely gifted and went on to great success with the exception of one who drowned just before graduation in 1968. McAbee discovers the eight students had strained relations with each other. Cynthia became aware of information that unsettled her as she was putting together a book about the club, so much so that it becomes apparent to McAbee that her work and speculations would make her dangerous. In the course of his investigation, he is inexorably drawn to Cynthia's time in Sarajevo and the murder of her lover, Toma. Eventually, he sees the need to visit Sarajevo and Belgrade to finally get a hold on this extraordinary case. Through the process of his work, he will utilize his associates who have figured heavily through all of his cases. Augusta Satin, his best friend and purported lover; Pat Trump, his can-do secretary; Jack Scholz, his dangerous right-hand man; and the troubled Barry Fisk, his computer wizard. As the investigation proceeds, McAbee will deal with the five remaining members of the club. Now in their late 60s, all of them are tough, battle-hardened, and compulsively protective of the reputations and legacies. And yet, at least one of them is probably a murderer with ruthless instincts. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Scott R. Pollak. World War II Auschwitz: A History from Beginning to End , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 60min
Auschwitz is a monument to the barbaric inhumanity of the Nazi regime. It is the site where more than one million people were systematically tortured and killed in support of Adolf Hitler’s determination to eradicate entire populations that he viewed as racially impure. Dr. Josef Mengele conducted horrific experiments on live victims, treating his subjects as if they weren’t human. The Jews, homosexuals, Communists, Jehovah’s Witnesses, and the mentally and physically disabled were less than human to the Nazis. The “Final Solution”, a cornerstone of Nazi ideology, enacted a devastating sentence upon people whose only crime was their ethnic origin or their religious and political beliefs. But the voices of Auschwitz continue to be heard. Anne Frank’s diary speaks for all the innocent who were sent there. Elie Wiesel spent his life speaking out against the horrors he and others endured at Auschwitz. The recorded histories of the survivors of the camps keep the memories alive for generations whose only knowledge of the Holocaust would otherwise be through a school assignment to read The Diary of Anne Frank or by watching a movie like Schindler’s List. Auschwitz holds a bizarre fascination for those who hear about it. How could such evil thrive? How could an entire nation surrender to the rantings of a diabolical man who sought revenge against the followers of a religion? The names reverberate in a gallery of maniacs who purported to be leaders: Hitler, Goebbels, Mengele, Goering, Himmler, and the countless others who supported them. In this book you will learn about... Adolf Hitler and the Preservation of the Aryan Race The Nazis in Charge The Final Solution to the Jewish Question The Angel of Death Life in Auschwitz ungekürzt. European History , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 40min
Europe's relationship with culture, even at the most basic level, dates back to at least 20,000 BCE. The Venus of Willedorf and the cave paintings of Altamira and Lascaux are examples of the presence of civilization in Europe thousands of years ago. By 5000 BC, evidence proves that areas of Europe had begun to show hierarchical societies and a firm agricultural background had been formed by many of these societies. While a clear division of boundaries did not exist back then, the history of Europe if we go back to thousands of years ago, during the Neolithic age, can be mainly traced through their settlements and tools. A strong political and social era did not emerge before the Roman and Byzantine period. Thus, Europe's history began to take form when the Roman's empire rose to its glory. Europe has undoubtedly seen different periods of settlement before the Roman Empire as well, but evidence, clear dates and archaeology is at its minimal during these periods. While many people completely believe that history is somewhat similar to storytelling, the only thing that makes a difference is the presence of facts and evidence when it comes to history. Every historian has to comb through each fact closely before choosing what actually happened from what is being purported as may have happened. The facts of European history have been put together in this book. The chapters are named primarily after an event that may have been the most prominent one during a period, but every chapter will cover more than just that event. It will cover the things that led to the event and the ones after the event as well. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Tracy Tupman. Where the Deer and the Antelope Play: The Pastoral Observations of One Ignorant American Who Loves to Walk Outside
A humorous and rousing set of literal and figurative sojourns as well as a mission statement about comprehending, protecting, and truly experiencing the outdoors, fueled by three journeys undertaken by actor, humorist, and New York Times bestselling author Nick OffermanNick Offerman has always felt a particular affection for the Land of the Free not just for the people and their purported ideals but to the actual land itself: the bedrock, the topsoil, and everything in between that generates the health of your local watershed. In his new book, Nick takes a humorous, inspiring, and elucidating trip to America's trails, farms, and frontier to examine the people who inhabit the land, what that has meant to them and us, and to the land itself, both historically and currently. In 2018, Wendell Berry posed a question to Nick, a query that planted the seed of this book, sending Nick on two memorable journeys with pals a hiking trip to Glacier National Park with his friends Jeff Tweedy and George Saunders, as well as an extended visit to his friend James Rebanks, the author of The Shepherd's Life and English Pastoral. He followed that up with an excursion that could only have come about in 2020 Nick and his wife, Megan Mullally, bought an Airstream trailer to drive across (several of) the United States. These three quests inspired some deep-ish" thinking from Nick, about the history and philosophy of our relationship with nature in our national parks, in our farming, and in our backyards; what we mean when we talk about conservation; and the importance of outdoor recreation, all subjects very close to Nick's heart. With witty, heartwarming stories and a keen insight into the human problems we all confront, this is both a ramble through and celebration of the land we all love.- Shop: buecher

Large-Scale Land Acquisition in Ghana (eBook, PDF)
This book examines a large-scale land acquisition project for rice production in Ghana's Volta Region, which has been purported by some to be a social and ecological showcase of a company entering a "community-private partnership" with affected communities. Celebrated by national and international media, the project has received substantial amounts of funding from various donor organisations and claims to empower women through its much-lauded outgrower project. Although discourses of "development", "sustainability" and "women's empowerment" are used by the investment company, the state and the customary authorities to legitimise the large-scale land acquisition, this book highlights how the deal benefits mainly the powerful elite, including elite women, and generally increases the depreciation of those already most marginalised, such as poor female-headed households and settler communities that were dependent on resources from the commons now enclosed and transformed into a rice farm. The author adopts a New Institutionalist perspective in social anthropology in order to analyse how this land acquisition has been implemented in a plural institutional context and how different actors use different rules and regulations and associated legitimating discourses to increase their bargaining power and to pursue their own interests in a changing legal context. In addition, this perspective shows how benefits and losses are distributed along different intersecting axes of power, such as class, gender, clan membership and age. By focusing on power, gender and legitimisation strategies in the context of institutional change caused by the large-scale land acquisition, this book fills a gap in the literature on large-scale land acquisitions while contributing to the development of a theoretical perspective on institutional change, power relations and ideological legitimisation. This book will be of great interest to students and scholars of land and resource grabbing, agricultural development and agribusiness, land management and development studies more broadly.- Shop: buecher
