In this religious tract published in 1917, H. G. Wells (who achieved fame as a pioneer in the science fiction genre of writing) details his beliefs in a "modern religion", which involves the eschewing of rites and dogmatic beliefs for a more universal theology. He rejects certain aspects of dominant Christian dogmas such as the idea of the Holy Trinity and the omniscience and omnipresence of God and outlines his vision of an all-encompassing, all-inclusive society guided by devotion to serving God. ungekürzt. The Scavengers are back, and if you've followed my story up until now, then you'll know it's not all gumdrops and lollipops over here. If it were just The Scavengers, I might've been all about the challenge, but this time they've brought their leader - an eighth grader named Victor. He's everything that Wyatt is, only a bajillion times worse. Victor won't rest until he takes away the most important thing in my life, and guess what? He's doing a bang-up job of it. As if that wasn't enough, let's also toss in the fact that my best friends are getting framed for the destruction of the new Buchanan statue! Time's running out, and now I have to finish what The Scavengers started a couple weeks back, but as cray cray as they are, I'm freaked that this could actually mean the end of my rockin' ninja lifestyle. Diary of a 6th Grade Ninja 9: The Scavengers Strike Back is a funny thriller that's entertaining for kids, middle school students, and adults. ungekürzt. Dr. Peikoff makes a compelling case for a rational system of education by contrasting three approaches to philosophy and the different educational alternatives they propose to replace our present system. He translates the usual abstract discussions in this field into material easily comprehensible to the listener. In the process, he defines a proper methodology and curriculum that will produce thinking high school graduates confident of their ability to achieve their goals. ungekürzt. Language: English. Annie Prince has impetuously flown halfway 'round the world to visit a sexy cowboy she met online - only to find herself stranded in Sydney. Seems she and Dylan crossed wires, and he's on his way to New York. His twin, Hunter, saves the day and whisks her back to the family cattle station. Hunter's as easy on the eyes as Dylan, and even easier to talk to. Annie might have flown to Oz to meet one brother, but soon sparks are flying with the other. Hunter considered Dylan a dumb arse for jetting off to America for some stranger - until he met Annie. Turns out the New Yorker is a smart, funny, hard-working jillaroo… and hotter than the Aussie desert. Hunter's not normally one to poach his brother's women, but he can't keep his hands, lips, tongue and other body parts off this sexy city girl. When raging lust leads to emotional attachment, where does that leave Annie and Hunter when her vacation comes to an end - or when Dylan finds out? ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: India Plum. There are a billion realities out there, each protected by Jump Division, an interdimensional task force dedicated to preserving the stability of the grid. However, not all agents are created equal. Some are just arseholes. Marcus Hayes is one such arsehole. He's loud, brash, walks away from explosions in slow motion, and pretty much everyone hates him. After yet another mission going awry due to him being a dick, he's stationed on a mundane world as punishment. But as a threat to the world looms, it becomes apparent that this reality isn't even close to being as boring as it's supposed to be.... ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Lee Isserow. Along with Virgil, Horace (Quintus Horatius Flaccus) was the greatest poet produced by Rome, and in many ways his work has had arguably an even greater impact. He and Virgil were both discovered and brought to the court of Augustus by that remarkable aristocrat and patron of letters, Maecenas. But there the similarities end. Virgil was an epic and didactic poet; Horace was a lyric poet who adapted the complex meters of Greek poetry to the needs of Latin. His brilliant expression and astonishing acumen continue to amaze readers today, either in their original Latin or in innumerable worldwide translations. Shakespeare's debt to Horace is incalculable, and it is difficult to read his Sonnets today without immediately being reminded of the famous Odes. Horace, born in 65 B.C. in the southeastern region of Hellenized Italy, was the son of a freedman of modest means. In the civil war between Antony and Octavian, he threw in his lot with Antony and fled along with the rest upon their defeat at Phillipi in 42 B.C. His subsequent discovery by Maecenas and eventual rehabilitation with the Augustan regime was one of history's most fortunate reconciliations. The works of Horace include the Odes, Epodes, Satires, Epistles, and various other fragments and hymns. His gentle nature and free-flowing mind produced some of the world's supremely great poetry, and his legacy to Latin letters is assured for as long as civilization itself remains. Horace died in 8 B.C., just a few short weeks after his beloved patron, Maecenas. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Charlton Griffin. 2001: Beyond the Infinite is a celebration of the 50th anniversary of one of the greatest films ever made. When 2001: A Space Odyssey opened on April 3, 1968, science fiction films were not well-regarded by critics. In fact, most considered them to be juvenile, with little intellectual or artistic value. Except for a few clever efforts like Forbidden Planet and Planet of the Apes, they were mostly low budget quickies that featured lurid monsters and cardboard rocket ships. The New York film critics hated Stanley Kubrick's epic space adventure, in part, because he defied their expectations by producing a literate work of science fiction. Ironically, their reviews didn't stop moviegoers from lining up at the box office. A few understood what Kubrick was trying to do. Some just went for the spectacle, while many others dropped acid and waited for the light show to take them on the ultimate trip. Today, audiences have come to regard 2001 as a masterpiece not only for its technical achievements in special effects but also for its hopeful, possibly prophetic vision of the future.Three-time Hugo nominee John L. Flynn documents the production of the film - from Arthur Clarke's initial short story through Kubrick's final edit - to look at the motion picture's critical reception and speculates on what the film was trying to say. He then concludes with interviews with several of the original cast members, including HAL 9000, and looks at the film's lasting legacy. A must-listen for science fiction fans and fans of the film. ungekürzt.
