Las Vegas in 1949 was a vastly different city than the one of today. In 1949, Las Vegas was a bus-stop that made its living from selling tax-free cigarettes. The few casinos that existed were old west saloons. This all changed when Benjamin "Bugsy" Segal built his glitter palace - the Flamingo Hotel. In the ultimate hostile take-over in 1947, "Bugsy" was murdered and new management took over the hotel. The town braced itself for a possible all-out mob war. The war never happened and tensions eased until in 1949 mobster Johnny Del Rio was found murdered execution-style. State Patrolman Kelly O'Brian and Clark County Sherriff's detective Dick Pearson were assigned to investigate Del Rio's murder. Dick thought it was mob related but Kelly wasn't so sure after he talked to a string of hustlers, hookers, hypes, and hop heads that lived in Johnny's world. Whoever was right about Johnny's death - one thing was clear they had to be careful. The closer they got to the killer the more danger they would be in. What Kelly didn't know was the real danger was much closer than he imagined and it would take all the skill, guts, and luck he could muster as he navigates the neon nights of Las Vegas. ungekürzt. Relationships aren’t rocket science. If they were, I might stand a chance of figuring one out.ElijahSaying I've had a crush on my best friend's older brother, Pax, most of my life is like saying the big bang was just an explosion. It's true, but I'm not sure that quite captures the essence of its true enormity.I know he's only hanging out with me because I'm new in town and getting my PhD doesn't leave me with much time to make friends. And even if it did, my strength is mathematics, not friend-making. What I don't understand is why he kissed me...why he seems to want to keep kissing me. I don't think my advanced physics knowledge is going to help me figure this one out. But I think for once I'm okay with not knowing, as long as Pax and I don't know together.PaxHe's still the awkward Nerdlet I remember...he's also probably the cutest, most tempting man I've laid eyes on. I know I should keep my hands off him, but this thing between us is like a force of nature. I want to be his first everything. He says we're nothing more than atoms crashing into each other. I'm no scientist but I don't think either of us are braced for the explosion.Rocket Science is a stand-alone MM romance featuring an inexperienced nerd, a cocky player, and a satisfying HEA ungekürzt. After Hurricane Katrina laid bare the fragility and environmental peril of South Louisiana, author Ian McNulty set out on a series of daytrips to delve into the area's diverse cultural landscapes. He explored communities staked up and down the Mississippi River, nestled into the teeming bayous, braced along the edge of the Gulf, and planted out on the golden prairie stretching to the west. Louisiana Rambles is his richly evocative guide to those journeys.McNulty delivers an inimitable take on Cajun and Creole Louisiana-the siren call of zydeco dance halls pulsing in the country darkness; of crawfish "boiling points" and traditional country smokehouses; of Cajun jam sessions, where even wallflowers are compelled to dance; of equine gambits in the cradle of jockeys; and of fishing trips where anyone can land impressive catches. In South Louisiana, distilled European heritage, the African American experience, and modern southern exuberance mix with tumultuous history and fantastically fecund natural environments. The territories McNulty opens to the listener are arguably the nation's most exotic and culturally distinct destinations.McNulty quests for the heart of these places and people. Much more than a travel guide or collection of travel narratives, Louisiana Rambles is a seasoned writer's witness to an epic locale that is very often joyous, sometimes heartbreaking, and always vital and stimulating. The book is published by University Press of Mississippi. Nonprofit Hero is written by Valerie Jones, who has raised more than $175 million for nonprofits and coached thousands of people to authentically and successfully ask for the causes they care about. She’s addressed more than 50 audiences from Baltimore to Beijing and is one of fewer than 10,000 Certified Fund-Raising Executives (CFREs) worldwide. In addition to running her boutique consulting firm, Valerie M. Jones Associates (VMJA), she’s volunteered extensively, serving nonprofits as president, chair, board member, and committee member. Her method works. Trained boards report increased comfort and willingness to ask. Many indicate they are prepared to ask for bigger gifts, can identify more prospective donors, and intend to contact these prospects sooner. Her book, Nonprofit Hero, contains stories, tools, and exercises not included in trainings. Listeners will learn how to:  Honor their fears. Surprisingly, these contain their personal prescription for success. Channel their passion by tapping the energy of why they want what they want. Discover their asking personality, including how they should and shouldn’t ask. Get started with tips on 30 simple things to do right now for free to help raise money. Follow five easy steps, starting with thanking, not asking, and with givers, not prospects. Cast themselves as stars, finding the step they’ll most enjoy and at which they’ll excel. Attract support by listening, understanding motivations, and helping fulfill donors’ desires. Elevate their speech so that they can make their case sincerely and with compelling confidence. Get in the right frame of mind to show up ready for “yes”, not braced for “no”. This audiobook also helps listeners form an in-depth description of their asking personality. It illustrates how they can best thank, steward, research, cultivate, and ask; which of the five ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Valerie M. Jones. On the evening of March 17, 1959, as the people of Tibet braced for a violent power grab by Chinese occupiers—one that would forever wipe out any vestige of national sovereignty—the 24-year-old Dalai Lama, Tibet’s political and spiritual leader, contemplated the impossible. The task before him was immense: to slip past a cordon of crack Chinese troops ringing his summer palace and, with an escort of 300, journey across the highest terrain in the world and over treacherous Himalayan passes to freedom—one step ahead of pursuing Chinese soldiers.Mao Zedung, China’s ruthless Communist dictator, had pinned his hopes for total Tibetan submission on controlling the impressionable Dalai Lama. So beloved was the young ruler—so identified with his country’s essence—that for him to escape might mean perpetual resistance from a population unwilling to tolerate an increasingly brutal occupation. The Dalai Lama’s minders sent word to the Tibetan rebels and CIA-trained guerrillas who waited on the route: His Holiness must escape—at all costs. In many ways, the 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, was unprepared for the epic journey awaiting him. Twenty-two years earlier, government search parties, guided by prophecies and omens, had arrived at the boy’s humble peasant home and subjected the two-year-old to a series of tests. After being declared the reincarnation of Tibet’s previous ruler, the boy was brought to Lhasa to learn the secrets of Buddhism and the ways of ultimate power. Forced in the ensuing two decades to cope with aching loneliness and often stifling ritual—and compelled to suppress his mischievous personality—Gyatso eventually proved himself a capable leader. But no previous Dalai Lama had ever taken on a million Communist Chinese soldiers bent on stamping out Tibetan freedom. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Shishir Kurup. Russell Jones is a living example of what is possible in physical fitness and wellness. At 66 years old, he looks and feels better than people half his age. This book was created to help offer a solution to the many people who live their day to day lives feeling sick and tired and are ready to make some changes and live their best life in the only body they'll ever have.  I'm sick and tired of:  America being obese and overweight (as a kid growing up 15 people could fit in an elevator, now only three). My friends and family dying way too young.People coming to me injured, sick, and out of shape to tell me everything they know about health.Lazy, out-of-touch doctors who would rather write a prescription than offer sound guidance on how to eat and exercise. The fitness industry preying on people who need real help.Hearing people blame their genetics for their health woes when the truth is that it's their lifestyle.Finicky eaters of all ages. How physically weak America has become.Erectile dysfunction commercials..People who tell me how many steps they took today.20-year-old fitness gurus. Those who tell me how their doctor told them how fit they are but that they have to stay on three lifetime medications. The two major obstacles to everyone's health...misinformation and habits.Health experts who either look anything but healthy or are on a PED needle (performance enhancing drugs).Yoga classes filled with uncontrollable gas. If all the world became vegetarians, it would be people emitting vast quantities of methane gas replacing cows as number one. Everyone being braced - ankles, knees, backs, elbows, wrists, necks. Braces can hold you up but eventually they hold you back.Of desperate people signing up for the "quick fix" - gastric bypass, gastric sleeves, vitamins, magic potions and ungekürzt. Epidemiologists are braced for the big one: the strain of flu that rivals the pandemic of 1918-1919, which killed at least 20 million people worldwide. In recent years, we have experienced scares with a host of new influenza viruses: bird flu, swine flu, Spanish flu, Hong Kong flu, H5N1, and most recently, H5N7. While these diseases appear to emerge from thin air, in fact, human activity is driving them. And the problem is not just flu, but a series of rapidly evolving and dangerous modern plagues. According to veterinarian and journalist Mark Walters, we are contributing to - if not overtly causing - some of the scariest epidemics of our time. Through human stories and cutting-edge science, Walters explores the origins of seven diseases: Mad Cow Disease, HIV/AIDS, Salmonella DT104, Lyme Disease, Hantavirus, West Nile, and new strains of flu. He shows that they originate from manipulation of the environment, from emitting carbon and clear-cutting forests to feeding naturally herbivorous cows “recycled animal protein.” Since Walters first drew attention to these “ecodemics” in 2003 with the publication of Six Modern Plagues, much has learned about how they developed. In this new, fully updated edition, the author presents research that precisely pinpoints the origins of HIV, confirms the link between forest fragmentation and increased risk of Lyme Disease, and expands knowledge of the ecology of West Nile Virus. He also explores developments in emerging diseases, including a new chapter on flu, examining the first influenza pandemic since the Hong Kong flu of 1968; a new tick-borne infection in the Mid-West; a second novel bird flu in China; and yet a new SARS-like virus in the Middle East. Readers will not only learn how these diseases emerged but the conditions that make future pandemics more likely. This knowledge is critical in order to prevent the next modern plague. ungekürzt. The Mormon Church may have disavowed the polygamy it became so famous for in the 19th century, but for some Fundamentalist Latter-Day Saints, "plural marriage" isn't just ancient history. Mormon bishop's wife Linda Wallheim is stunned to learn her son Kenneth has gotten engaged to a young woman from a polygamous family. Naomi Carter may have left the religion she grew up in, but the Carters will still be the Wallheims' in-laws once Kenneth and Naomi are married. Stephen Carter, Naomi's father and the patriarch of the Carter clan, invites the Wallheims over to the Carter family compound in the remote foothills of the mountains outside Salt Lake City. Stephen Carter wishes to extend an olive branch to his future in-laws and introduce them to his five wives and 22 children. But Linda suspects he also wants to try to persuade the Wallheims that his way of life is truly righteous. From Linda's point of view, polygamy is an abhorrent practice, one that dehumanizes women and makes children vulnerable to unhealthy family structures. She and her husband, Kurt, arrive at the Carter compound braced for trouble - Linda has her eyes peeled for signs that Stephen's wives and children are unhappy or abused. Although she can't find concrete evidence of mistreatment, Linda's gut instinct tells her that something on the Carter family compound is deeply wrong. She can't quite put her finger on what - until it's too late, and one of the family members is found murdered. Afraid that Stephen Carter's unworldly, sequestered wives and children might suffer at the hands of investigating police, Linda vows to stay at the compound until the murderer is found and the survivors are safe. But even if she manages to do more good than harm with her snooping and interfering, Linda can't unsee what she has seen during her time at the Carters'. Now, confronting the legacy of polygamy in her own Mormon family raises even more questions about her already shaky faith. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Kirsten Potter.
