Mary Poppins, She Wrote: The Life of P. L. Travers , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 852min
The story of Mary Poppins, the quintessentially English and utterly magical children's nanny, is remarkable enough. She flew into the lives of the unsuspecting Banks family in a children's book that was instantly hailed as a classic, then became a household name when Julie Andrews stepped into the starring role in Walt Disney's hugely successful and equally classic film. Now she is a Broadway sensation all over again. But the story of Mary Poppins's creator, as this first biography reveals, is just as unexpected and remarkable. The fabulous English nanny was conceived by an Australian, Pamela Lyndon Travers, who in 1924 came to London from Sydney as a journalist. She became involved with theosophy and traveled in the literary circles of W. B. Yeats and T. S. Eliot. Most famously, she clashed with "the great convincer" Walt Disney over the adaptation of the Mary Poppins books into film. Travers, whom Disney accused of vanity for "thinking you [Travers] know more about Mary Poppins than I do," was as tart and opinionated as Julie Andrews's big-screen Mary Poppins was cheery and porcelain beautiful. "You've got the nose for it," Travers candidly assessed the star. Yet it was a love of mysticism and magic that shaped P. L. Travers's life as well as the character of Mary Poppins. The clipped, strict, and ultimately mysterious nanny was the conception of someone who remained thoroughly inscrutable and enigmatic to the end of her 96 years. "Who is P. L. Travers?" the American press inquired of "this unknown Englishwoman" whose creation resulting in Hollywood gold had won her international fame. Valerie Lawson's illuminating biography, Mary Poppins, She Wrote, provides the first and only glimpse into the mind of a writer who fervently believed that "Everyday life is the miracle." ungekürzt. Love from Boy: Roald Dahl's Letters to His Mother , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 431min
From the author of The BFG - soon to be a major motion picture directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Mark Rylance, Ruby Barnhill, Penelope Wilton, Jemaine Clement, Bill Hader, and Adam Godley - a whimsical, witty, and revealing collection of the legendary children's author and writer Roald Dahl's letters written to his mother, from early childhood through Dahl's travels to Africa; his career in the Royal Air Force; his work in postwar Washington, DC, and Hollywood; and the books that made him a literary star. Roald Dahl penned his first letter to his mother, Sofie Magdalene, when he was just nine years old. The origins of a brilliantly funny, subversive, creative mind were evident in boarding school, and as he entered adulthood, his penchant for storytelling emerged in his missives home from Africa, where he was stationed by Shell Oil, and then the desert camps of the Royal Air Force. His skills were sharpened after a plane crash in Egypt landed him in Washington, DC, where his cheery letters home were cover for his work in the British Secret Service, along with gossipy updates on his spontaneous rise in Hollywood and his budding New York literary career. His mother was, in many ways, Dahl's first reader, and without her correspondence he might never have become a writer. Sofie Magdalene kept every letter her son wrote to her (sadly, her own side of the correspondence did not survive). It was she who encouraged him to tell stories and nourished his desire to fabricate, exaggerate, and entertain. In these letters Dahl began practicing his craft, developing the dark sense of humor and fantastical imagination that would later produce his timeless tales. The author of James and the Giant Peach, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Matilda, and The BFG, Dahl is known by millions the world over today. But writing candidly to the person who knew him best, Dahl was as singular a character as any he creat ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Thomas Judd, Andrew Wincott. Erotic Stories , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 118min, (USK 18)
My vacation was shaping up to be a momentous disappointment. I'd been on the island for five days, and it had done nothing but rain. I'd seen nothing but the inside of my hotel room. This was supposed to be my "single woman finds hot sex on vacation" trip. Instead, the hottest sex I'd had was when I decided I shouldn't waste my Brazilian wax job, and indulged in a bit of self-abuse with a lovely tingling lube. I called down to the lobby to find out about the nightlife on the island. The cheery girl who answered told me that the entire lobby was transformed into a club at night. I put on a dress that was more about exposing skin than covering it up. I piled my hair high on my head and slipped into a pair of heels that I normally wouldn't wear. I ordered room service for dinner, and then headed down to the transformed lobby. There were bodies everywhere, and it seemed that the dress code on the island beaches carried over to the club. I saw more skin just walking to the bar than I usually encountered in a few months. Everyone was gyrating and grinding, dancing wildly. I figured I'd join in and see where the night took me. I ordered a hurricane and a shot of rum. Before I could down the shot, there was a second one placed in front of me. I looked around and spotted a sexy shirtless guy at the end of the bar, he raised his shot to me and downed it. I followed suit with both of my shots. I picked up my drink and wandered in his direction. When I got there he grabbed my hand and kissed it gallantly, then gestured to the dance floor. Before I knew it, I was “this close” to his naked chest, and his hands were getting acquainted with all the skin my barely-there dress served up to him. We danced the evening away in between shots of rum and innocent tasting mixed drinks. We made our way back to my room hours later, carrying my shoes by their straps and still sipping on those lovely drinks. There was no need for words, as we got naked with a passi ungekürzt. Oh No The Drift Of The World
Wunderbare bluesy & folky Singer / Songwriter - Entdeckung! Ruhig, akustisch, arachaisch, atmosphärisch & tief.Wunderbare bluesy & folky Singer / Songwriter - Entdeckung! Erscheint auf dem Label von Scoobius Pip. Ruhig, akustisch, arachaisch, atmosphärisch & tief. Oh No. The Drift Of The World is a debut album that doesn't feel the need to shout loudly. In fact, it's probably one of the most stirringly intimate records you'll hear all year, a collection of bluesy, folky acoustic songs largely consisting of guitar and hushed, smoky voice, performed by the somewhat mysterious Jackamo Brown. The album comes in two 18-minute parts, with ambient recordings linking and running through the tracks. It's an anti-shuffle record, its mood, feel and ethos coming from another, simpler time. Recorded and produced YILA at Empire Studios in Hackney and mastered by Mandy Parnell at Black Saloon. The recording was basic: just a mic gaffer taped to Brown's guitar, a mic for his vocals and some room mics for capturing the street noise bleeding in through open windows and the guitar and organ that feature on three tracks. Further ambient sounds were recorded after the session by Jackamo in his local area. Influenced by Bert Jansch, Dylan and Arthur Lee, whose Five String Serenade is covered on the album, Brown began recording music seven years ago, having written songs in private for years before that. Many of the tracks on the album date back to that time. The most dominant theme from the listener's perspective, I think, is of love lost or relinquished, says Brown. There are other cheery subjects like death and alienation thrown in too, as well as quiet nods to Russian Literature and Lorem Ipsum. The idea of releasing the tracks did not come naturally to the reluctant performer. I never had any intention of pursuing a music career, says Brown. I still have no real desire to earn a living through music, or earn a living at all really. I have some issues with selling your art but there is enough distance between me now and the Jackamo of the songs and I jumped at the opportunity to give them a physical form. The offer to do so came from Scroobius Pip, who releases the album on his Speech Develpment Records label. In the age of everyone knowing everything about everyone I was weirdly excited by the fact that, if you Google Jackamo Brown you find very little, says the poet/rapper. As a fan of his work, I wanted to get some of his music recorded together, in one collection and as one piece. Outside of music, Jackamo Brown occasionally works in libraries. I always choose time over money and so spend the majority of my time dedicated to philosophy, literature and music and convincing myself that poverty is noble. I studied philosophy to post-graduate level and I am about ready to start work on a book. One thing you shouldn't expect to see is Jackamo Brown performing live. I have never wanted the particular sort of attention that goes with a stage performance or the applause of a crowd (assuming anyone might applaud), he says. I did a live session of sorts for Jon Hillcock and played a live set at the Leigh Folk Festival in order to be sure I was not just rationalising a fear of performing live. I may, of course, change my mind down the line. We suspect he'll find many new devotees who hope he does. TRACKS: PART ONE: 1. Dust In My Veins 2. In My Time 3. When She Comes 4. The Student Prince
Busby Berkeley, the musical staging genius behind 42nd Street and the Gold Diggers series, bid farewell to his original Warner Bros. Contract in swingin' style with tunes by Harry Warren, Al Dubin and Johnny Mercer. Now that's Golden Age name-dropping. The story is a breezy bit of show-biz romance set at the title nightclub, a chi-chi spot where the owner (Pat O'Brien) and the bandleader (screen-debuting John Payne) spar over everything from chewing gum to the club's pretty flack (Margaret Lindsay). Of course, the real story is the music and Garden of the Moon barely catches it's breath between songs, including the cheery Love Is Where You Find It and the playful, scat-singin' wit of The Girlfriend of the Whirling Dervish.- Shop: odax

Snap Crackle & Pop
Sunny Ridell He received the nickname 'Sunny' from his grandmother because of his bright and cheery disposition. He began his career as a ten-year-old singing on the street corners of Crystal Springs, Mississippi. Went to New Orleans age 16 or so to record at Whitecliff Records, the same label and studio as Little Richard and Fats Domino. Appeared regularly at Club 77 on Claiborne Street where he and Bobby Bland shared top billing. Did shows with Lee Dorsey, Ernie K-Doe, and Lou Rawls. Toured Europe with BB King and Carol Burnett. Sunny recorded 'Come out into my World' at Whitecliff, and sold ~350,000 copies of the single before the IRS chained the studio door shut. Later, he went to Darva records in Texas, where he recorded 'I'm Black and I know I'm Somebody'. After this song was banned from radio in Mississippi and other states, it was renamed 'Soul 100 Part 1 and Part 2'. Soul 100 was minor hit and eventually made it to nearly every jukebox in the Delta. In Texas worked with Ray Stevens, Charlie Daniels, and Willie Nelson. Sunny has appeared in 18 movies. His most notable parts were in 'Leadbelly', in which he played a convict, and 'Outlaw Blues', in which he played a Deputy Sheriff. Peter Fonda gave Sunny the idea for the cape that he wears in his show. During the filming of Outlaw Blues, Sunny had to jump up on top of 'ten sacks of fertilizer.' Peter Fonda made Sunny repeat the leap so he could see, then made the comment, 'Give him a cape. That man can fly!' A cape was presented to Sunny during filming the next day. Sunny has played literally all over the world. He has toured Europe as part of a show with B. B. King and Carol Burnett. He played on the same bill with Bobby Bland for over a year. He has done TV shows with Lou Rawls, Sam Cooke, and Otis Redding. He recorded at Muscle Shoals with Percy Sledge. He currently lives in his hometown of Crystal Springs, Mississippi.- Shop: odax

Beckett Miscellany
All of the works assembled for this recording were written for specific times, places, or events that cover a span of 23 years. They were all written for specific performers who are, in nearly every case, different from the ones who play them on this CD. In making the musical selections for this CD, I made an attempt to include as many instrumentalists from Arcady, the ensemble of which I am founding director, as possible. Arcady has recorded two choral-vocal/ orchestral CDs, A Baroque Messiah and Welcome Yule! - Christmas Music of Ronald Beckett, and has been featured on a third - Peace on Earth with flutist Kim Shippey. The opera Ruth will be released late in 2006. For The Woodwind Quintet, I was fortunate to have four of the five original Essex Winds, for whom the work was originally written, play for this CD. I was always impressed by the players' technical skills and sense of style, as well as by the humour that they brought to their live performances. The work is an attempt to capture all of those qualities. The Fantasia, a completion of an organ fragment by Bach, is a piece that to me always had more the feeling of a trio sonata. It is in that guise that it appears for this CD. The Trio for Flute, Clarinet, and Horn, Three Short Pieces for Piano, and the Mixolydian Quartet, arranged here as a piano duet, were written for instructional purposes. They are simple, lyric, and a definite contrast to the 11/4 metre Toccata from the Oboe Sonata, which was written for university performance. The Octatonic Suite was written for this CD. Of the modes of limited transposition, the octatonic scale, which alternates whole and half steps, is probably the most useful in that it is able to suggest a full range of harmonic and melodic sonorities. In Arcady's history, it's most significant achievement has been it's performances of the operas written for it. Included on this CD are two of the cycle's instrumental dances: the festive harvest celebration of Ruth and the Wedding at Cana from I Am.... In the medley from John we hear instrumentally the voices of Elizabeth and Zacharias, the chaotic dance that precedes Herod's appearance, and the dance of Salome. For a more complete description of the CD's contents, please consult it's liner notes. I hope that you enjoy the music of this CD. If you have a group of your own and wish to use any of these works, do not hesitate to contact us. These are works to be shared. -Ronald Beckett Acclaim "Listening to these charming suites, epilogues, fantasias, dances, toccatas, and trios by Canadian composer Ronald Beckett makes one realize just how far the neo-tonal counter-revolution has come. Written over a 23-year period, these are cheery, player-friendly 'works to be shared' (in the composer's words) employing baroque counterpoint, occasional minirealist rhythms, and lots of diatonic tunes. Arcady, a chamber group founded by Beckett himself, plays with bubbly energy." -American Record Guide "If Ron Beckett's music is half as much fun to write as it is to hear, he must go around smiling all the time" -Richard Todd, Ottawa Citizen "He has drive, energy, movement and motion all bundled up in old and new style writing that never leaves you bored." -George Sandford, 701.com "This CD demonstrates his solid craftsmanship and pleasant nature as a composer. Mr. Beckett should be commended for his creativity and obvious mastery at bringing people together to make music: a positive force." -Larry Beckwith, WholeNote "...intellectually stimulating music that is fun and pleasant to listen to." -Murray Charters, Brantford Expositor "Listeners who sometimes despair when listening to new music will delight in the beautifully lyrical music comprising A Beckett Miscellany." -Robert Reid, Kitchener-Waterloo Record.- Shop: odax
