Expressions
The material for Expressions was chosen to celebrate the rich musical variety found within New Music Edmonton, (formerly Edmonton Composers' Concert Society and Tonus Vivus Society). Expressions pays homage to Edmonton's compositional heritage, it shares the influence of that heritage upon later Edmonton composers and it presents fresh ideas brought into the Edmonton new music community. This recording displays Edmonton's compositional heritage in the music of Manus Sasonkin and Violet Archer, who were stalwarts of the Edmonton composition scene and very influential as professors at the University of Alberta. Archer's Lydian Mood is a tender example of the many pieces she wrote to inspire young piano students to explore contemporary idioms while Sasonkin's Interludes for Harpsichord provide brief moments of fresh timbral air - an aural sorbet, if you will - among the selections for piano. Violet Archer's influence as a teacher is found in the Ballade of her pupil, Ron Hannah, which begins the journey of this recording. How fitting, too, that these two composers also began - nearly thirty years ago - the journey of the Edmonton Composers' Concert Society, which is now known as New Music Edmonton. Archer's legacy as a woman composer in Canada is celebrated in one movement of Linda J. Purves's Three Sisters, which, like Archer's Lydian Mood, was also written for the student pianist. Expressions clearly exhibits the wealth of perspective that composers have brought into Edmonton's new music scene and into New Music Edmonton itself: the minimalist style of Godin's The Number Series contrasts with both the complexity found in Pura's Labyrinth and with the extreme emotional reaches of Piotr Grella-Mozejko's Vijf tonale etudes/Cinq études sur la tonalité. The classically-framed Scherzo and Trio of Siaw Kin Lee and the Prelude and Fugue of George Andrix were chosen for their pure joy and levity. Andrix's experience within the jazz idiom lends an unexpected perspective to the traditional genre of the prelude and fugue.
