Dear Reader, Here is the first of my new Brides Trilogy, in which three unconventional young women vow they will never marry - only to be overtaken by destiny. Bride #1 is the outspoken Portia...It's bad enough that seventeen-year-old Portia Worth is taken in by her uncle, the marquis of Granville, after her father dies. As the bastard niece, Portia knows she can expect little beyond a roof over her head and a place at the table. But it truly adds insult to injury when the Granvilles' archenemy, the outlaw Rufus Decatur, hatches a scheme to abduct the marquis's daughter - only to kidnap Portia by accident. Portia, who possesses more than a streak of independence as well as a talent for resistance, does not take kindly to being abducted - mistakenly or otherwise. Decatur will soon find himself facing the challenge of his life, both on the battlefield and in the bedroom, as he contends with this misfit of a girl who has the audacity to believe herself the equal of any man. Warmest wishes, Jane Feather P.S. Phoebe, the "awkward" one, will be next, in The Accidental Bride.Watch for it in early 1999. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Jenny Sterlin. China's reform era is ending. Core factors that characterized it - political stability, ideological openness, and rapid economic growth - are unraveling.  Since the 1990s, Beijing's leaders have firmly rejected any fundamental reform of their authoritarian one-party political system, even as a decades-long boom has reshaped China's economy and society. On the surface, their efforts have been a success. Political turmoil has toppled former Communist East bloc regimes, internal unrest overtaken Middle East nations, and populist movements risen to challenge established Western democracies. China, in contrast, has appeared a relative haven of stability and growth.  But as Carl Minzner shows, a closer look at China's reform era reveals a different truth. Over the past three decades, a frozen political system has fueled both the rise of entrenched interests within the Communist Party itself and the systematic underdevelopment of institutions of governance among state and society at large. Economic cleavages have widened. Social unrest has worsened. Ideological polarization has deepened.  Now, to address these looming problems, China's leaders are progressively cannibalizing institutional norms and practices that have formed the bedrock of the regime's stability in the reform era. ungekürzt. Fortified with common sense and Biblical wisdom, Trumbull's straightforward guide has established its place as a classic work in the field of child rearing. Written over 100 years ago, it is completely free of modernist influence. After all, Freud had not yet developed his theories of the subconscious; Pavlov and Skinner had not yet introduced to educators their animal-training techniques known as behaviorism; Dewey's Religious (i.e. Secular) Humanism had not overtaken the public schools; and Dr. Benjamin Spock had not published his dangerous book on child training.Home schooling gurus Bill and Mary Pride write: "Each of these short chapters amazed us with its depth of practical insights: Why the Bible says we must train our children's will, not break them. Why scolding is always wrong-and what to do instead. How to train your child to be courteous, to deny himself, and not to pester. How to choose proper amusements and companions. How to nourish your child's faith. How to get willing obedience and respect from your children. This book will give you a whole new perspective on your joy as a parent-and a lot more hope!" ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Harold N. A major success of the early post-war period was the negotiated reduction of barriers to international trade in commodities and manufactured goods, under the auspices of the GATT. The current challenge is to achieve a similar liberalization for trade in services - the sector which has overtaken manufacturing as the largest provider of jobs and growth in the advanced economies. The difficulties are legion. Data are scarce and definitions are contentious. There is no clear equivalent in services of the zero-tariff objective that can be defined in the trade of goods. Domestic service markets are often imperfect and each country has its own regulatory structure to protect consumers. Many developing countries are sceptical about the effects of freer service trade on their economies. This paper develops an analytical framework to clarify negotiating objectives. It assesses the European Community's approach to liberalization and warns of the dangers of seeking 'equivalent reciprocity'. It suggests that a different approach and set of objectives are appropriate to the GATT, which lacks well-defined procedures for policy review and settlement of disputes, and whose members are more diverse. Finally, it evaluates the prospects for multilateral service liberalization in the Uruguay Round and in the EC by 1992, and suggests that such efforts can be complemented by unilateral and bilateral liberalization in certain service sectors.

Winterglass is a sci-fantasy about one woman's love for her homeland (Sirapirat) and her determination to defeat the Winter Queen who has overtaken the land. The city-state Sirapirat once knew only warmth and monsoon. When the Winter Queen conquered it, she remade the land in her image, turning Sirapirat into a country of snow and unending frost. But an empire is not her only goal. In secret, she seeks the fragments of a mirror whose power will grant her deepest desire. At her right hand is General Lussadh, who bears a mirror shard in her heart, as loyal to winter as she is plagued by her past as a traitor to her country. Tasked with locating other glass-bearers, she finds one in Nuawa, an insurgent who's forged herself into a weapon that will strike down the queen. To earn her place in the queen's army, Nuawa must enter a deadly tournament where the losers' souls are given in service to winter. Outlasting competition is difficult. Doing so for decades is nearly impossible. Yet some pioneering companies have endured and even prospered for generations. How did they do it? And what can we learn from them?  In today's competitive environment where latecomers can replicate almost any product or service for less, and where expert intuition and market intelligence have been overtaken by machine algorithms, companies can no longer just be very good at what they do. They need to leap to new knowledge disciplines. The best leap repeatedly. And it's the combination of two skills - mastery of the old and the new - that empowers them with the best competitive advantage.   To discover how some companies not only survive but thrive for centuries, strategy expert Howard Yu identifies key trends from business history, skillfully extracting timeless lessons and applying them to today. He illustrates how managers can look to leverage technological shifts, increasingly ubiquitous connectivity, smart machines, and managerial creativity - in order to leap forward. Ultimately, Leap is a playbook for the future that shows how pioneering players can thrive by rethinking their businesses, their relationships with customers, and the very reasons they exist. From an award-winning senior writer at Time, an eye-opening exploration of narcissism, how to recognize it, and how to handle it. The odds are good that you know a narcissist - probably a lot of them. The odds are also good that they are intelligent, confident, and articulate - the center of attention. They make you laugh and they make you think. The odds are also that this spell didn't last. Narcissists are everywhere. There are millions of them in the United States alone: entertainers, politicians, business people, your neighbors. Recognizing and understanding them is crucial to your not being overtaken by them, says Jeffrey Kluger, in his provocative new book about this insidious disorder. With insight and wit, Kluger frames the surprising new research on narcissism and explains the complex, exasperating personality disorder. He reveals how narcissism and narcissists affect our lives at work and at home, on the road, and in the halls of government; what to do when we encounter narcissism; and how to neutralize its effects before it's too late. As a Time writer and science editor, Kluger knows how to take science's new ideas and transform them into smart, accessible insights. Highly listenable and deeply engaging, this book helps us understand narcissism and narcissists more fully. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Jeffrey Kluger.
