The Only Pirate at the Party , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 374min
Dancing electronic violinist Lindsey Stirling shares her unconventional journey in an inspiring memoir filled with the energy, persistence, and humor that have helped her successfully pursue a passion outside the box. A classically trained musician gone rogue, Lindsey Stirling is the epitome of independent, millennial-defined success: After being voted off the set of America's Got Talent, she went on to amass more than 10 million social media fans, record two full-length albums, release multiple hits with billions of YouTube views, and tour sold-out venues across the world. Lindsey is not afraid to be herself. In fact it's her confidence and individuality that have propelled her into the spotlight. But the road hasn't been easy. After being rejected by talent scouts, by music reps, and eventually on national television, Lindsey forged her own path step by step. Detailing every trial and triumph she has faced until now, Lindsey shares stories of her humble yet charmed childhood, humorous adolescence, life as a struggling musician, personal struggles with anorexia, and finally success as a world-class entertainer. Lindsey's magnetizing story - at once remarkable and universal - is a testimony that there is no singular recipe for success, and despite what people may say, sometimes it's okay to be The Only Pirate at the Party. ungekürzt. Played!: Shamwell Tales , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 418min
All the world's a stage...but life doesn't come with a script. Posh boy Tristan Goldsmith has one last summer of freedom before he joins the family firm in New York - no more farting around on stage, as his father puts it. But the classically trained actor can't resist when the Shamwell Amateur Dramatics Society begs him to take a leading role in their production of A Midsummer Night's Dream. As an added incentive, he'll be giving private acting lessons to a gorgeous local handyman who's been curiously resistant to Tristan's advances. As a late-diagnosed dyslexic still struggling with literacy, Con Izzard's never dared to act before. With arrogant yet charming Tristan helping him with his lines, he finally has his chance to shine. But Con's determined not to start a romance with a man he's convinced only wants a casual fling. Tristan's never been one to back down from a challenge, especially when he realizes his attraction to the tall, muscular handyman isn't just physical. Just as he thinks he's finally won Con's heart - and given his own in return - disaster strikes with a slip of the tongue that shatters Con's trust and sends him running for cover. This show may be over before the curtains even opened. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Mark Steadman. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/acx0/096274/bk_acx0_096274_sample.mp3. Brutalism Reinvented (engl.)
From luxury apartment towers to offices, places of worship to museums, brutalist architecture is having a 21st-century moment-and this book is here to explore the new interpretations of the style. Designed with the same bold aesthetic that informed Le Corbusier himself, this book features fifty recent examples of how architects around the world are embracing the principles of brutalism-simplicity, functionality, and rawness and reimagining them for today's standards and tastes.Drawing from the radical approach of the controversial architectural movement, today's Brutalist buildings are both sophisticated and elegant. As the hundreds of exterior and interior photos in this book reveal, architects have taken advantage of new technology to make concrete-based structures that are refined and alluring, as well as stylish / modish unlike their predecessors. Each chapter dedicated to another type of buildings is introduced with a selection of iconic structures as an essential visual reference for Brutalism's new look. In some instances the overall strength of the aesthetic is paired with equally forceful materials such as glass, metal and brick; other examples show how classically brutalist lines are integrated into, generously proportioned, light-filled spaces. An informative celebration of Brutalist architecture's legacy, this book is an exciting exploration of how today's most innovative architects are discovering the inherent beauty of powerful concrete volumes, that was at the heart of Le Corbusier's original vision.Ausstattung: With 250 color illustrations- Shop: buecher

Doctor Dearest , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 570min
Dr. Easton is part man, part myth. He’s a formidable surgeon. Highly respected in his field. He also happens to be an ex-collegiate quarterback with a classically handsome face. Are you catching on yet? He’s horrible. Beautiful. A walking Ralph Lauren ad. He’s also so off-limits he should come with a warning label: This way lies heartache. Not only is he an attending at the hospital where I’m training, he’s also my brother’s best friend. If you’ve lost count, that’s two reasons why I plan on putting this ridiculous crush behind me. Besides, it’s definitely not mutual. Dr. Easton has never once paid me special attention. No tempting smirks. Not even one subtle innuendo. To him, I’m just another resident - all but invisible.ConnorFor the last five years, I’ve mentored Natalie in the OR, stayed in line, and kept my hands to myself, but it’s been agonizing.Natalie is trouble in scrubs. A walking temptation I’ve been forced to ignore. For so long, I’ve wanted her in silence. By the time fate finally throws me a bone, my patience has run out.Natalie’s brother is leaving town, and he wants me to watch over her while he’s gone. He has no idea how I feel about her. Neither does she. But she will.Haven’t you heard good things come to those who wait, Natalie? Well...I’ve done my waiting. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: CJ Bloom, Lee Samuels. Revenge of the Nerd , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 651min
This audiobook is read by the author. Risky Business. Revenge of the Nerds. Better Off Dead. Moonlighting. Supernatural. American Dad. New Girl. What do all of these movies and television shows have in common? Curtis Armstrong. A legendary comedic second banana to a litany of major stars, Curtis is forever cemented in the public imagination as Booger from Revenge of the Nerds. A classically trained actor, Curtis began his incredible 40-year career onstage but progressed rapidly to film and television. He was typecast early, and it proved to be the best thing that could have happened. But there's more to Curtis' story than that. Born and bred a nerd, he spent his early years between Detroit, a city so nerdy that the word was coined there in 1951, and, improbably, Geneva, Switzerland. His adolescence and early adulthood were spent primarily between the covers of a book and indulging his nerdy obsessions. It was only when he found his true calling, as an actor and unintentional nerd icon, that he found true happiness. With whip-smart, self-effacing humor, Armstrong takes us on a most unlikely journey - one nerd's hilarious, often touching rise to the middle. He started his life as an outcast and matured into...well, an older, slightly paunchier, hopefully wiser outcast. In Hollywood, as in life, that counts as winning the game. ungekürzt. Arthashastra, or, The Playbook of Material Gain (Annotated): A 2,300-Year-Old Guide on Politics, Statecraft and Power , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 594min
Truly radical 'Machiavellianism', in the popular sense of that word, is classically expressed in Indian literature in the Arthashastra of Kautilya (written long before the birth of Christ, ostensibly in the time of Chandragupta): compared to it, Machiavelli's The Prince is harmless. (Max Weber, "Politics as a Vocation" (1919)) Chanakya's treatise, written while turning a farmhand into the emperor of the largest empire India had ever seen, focuses on how to manage an empire, covering everything from domestic policy and personal rights to assassination and the dirtier arts of politics. This is not, as with Plato’s Republic, a work of theory. Chanakya’s guidance is entirely practical and is based on both his education and his experience building an empire. It lacks the philosophical ponderings and moralizing of its equivalent Western works (such as The Prince, The Republic, or Leviathan) and instead focuses on how one deals with the messiness of the world in practice. People will occasionally refer to Chanakya as an Indian Machiavelli, but this does some discredit to Chanakya. The Prince is a satire and focused around exposing the tactics and inhumanity of Cesare Borgia. Arthashastra is a manual for every aspect of statecraft, and while it deals in the unethical, it does so only because that is, after all is said and done, one of the options available to a ruler. If you're after a totally pragmatic analysis of leadership, stripped of moralising and focused on what works and how to deal with real-world issues, this is the audiobook for you. ungekürzt. #1 Crush , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 558min
Tia Monroe was smart, sassy, and successful. Sure, she could get a little crazy at times - life around Tia was never boring - but that was part of her appeal. And while she didn't see herself as classically beautiful, she had no shortage of options in the boyfriend department. She just hadn't found one who held her interest. Until she laid eyes on Eric Larsson, and then it was lust at first sight. He packed the perfect mix of smoldering sexy and unapologetic cool into his blond-haired, blue-eyed, ridiculously hot six-foot-four frame. One smile from him was enough to twist her insides, making her girlie bits tingle in the most delicious way. But it wasn't just his looks; he was smart and funny - charming in the most a-dork-able way. The only problem was... Tia had never actually met him. Eric Larsson was one of Hollywood's hottest movie stars, rising to the top of his game and leaving a trail of disintegrated panties in his wake. Tia's were no exception - but she wasn't delusional. Love, marriage, and happily ever after were not part of her fantasy; she just wanted to meet him. Just one time. One time. Confident that just seeing him in the flesh would get him out of her system. So, with her resolve steeled, Tia set off on a quest to make it happen while avoiding her mug shot being splayed across the five o'clock news. The journey no doubt will make for one hell of a story. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Grace Grant. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/adbl/030760/bk_adbl_030760_sample.mp3. John Gilbert: The Last of the Silent Film Stars (Screen Classics) , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 610min
Charming and classically handsome, John Gilbert (1897-1936) was among the world's most recognizable actors during the silent era. He was a wild, swashbuckling figure on screen and off, and accounts of his life have focused on his high-profile romances with Greta Garbo and Marlene Dietrich, his legendary conflicts with Louis B. Mayer, his four tumultuous marriages, and his swift decline after the introduction of talkies. A dramatic and interesting personality, Gilbert served as one of the primary inspirations for the character of George Valentin in the Academy Award - winning movie The Artist (2011). Many myths have developed around the larger-than-life star in the eighty years since his untimely death, but this definitive biography sets the record straight. Eve Golden separates fact from fiction in John Gilbert: The Last of the Silent Film Stars, tracing the actor's life from his youth spent traveling with his mother in acting troupes to the peak of fame at MGM, where he starred opposite Mae Murray, Norma Shearer, Joan Crawford, Greta Garbo, and other actresses in popular films such as The Merry Widow (1925), The Big Parade (1925), Flesh and the Devil (1926), and Love (1927). Golden debunks some of the most pernicious rumors about the actor, including the oft-repeated myth that he had a high-pitched, squeaky voice that ruined his career. Meticulous, comprehensive, this audiobook provides a behind-the-scenes look at one of the silent era's greatest stars and the glamorous yet brutal world in which he lived. ungekürzt.
