The Beltway Beast: Stealing from Future Generations and Destroying the Middle Class transcends the anger and frustration of American people with their leaders failing to solve the country's problems. It documents our current reality and offer transformational ideas, such as shrinking the presidential primary process by utilizing technology, reducing healthcare cost through smart patient credits, and using a value-based tax system that transfers power from Washington back to the states.   Too often, we accept the status quo instead of questioning why things are the way they are. For example, why is the working income taxed at a higher rate than the nonworking income? Why do the majority of Americans who are independent have to choose only between Democrats and Republicans for the president of the US? Why can't we reduce the cost of medical care so it is affordable instead of relying on health insurance companies as the only solution?   The Beltway consists of Washington, DC, and surrounding counties, and the Beast includes the military-industrial complex, multinational corporations, foreign agents, lobbyists, and Congress. The Beltway Beast is directed toward a system controlled by the Democrats and the Republicans representing the ghosts of the past with the Senate being made up of 80 percent men, 67 percent millionaires, and an average age of 62 years. They govern in unison by piling up debt on our children, taxing the working income more than the nonworking income, violating our privacy, and giving the illusion of security while keeping us on a perpetual war footing. ungekürzt. This audiobook uncovers the biggest scientific fraud of our age. It tells the fascinating and frequently astounding story of how the massive enterprise to restructure the genetic core of the world's food supply came into being, how it advanced by consistently violating the protocols of science, and how for more than three decades, hundreds of eminent biologists and esteemed institutions have systematically contorted the truth in order to conceal the unique risks of its products - and get them onto our dinner plates. Altered Genes, Twisted Truth provides a graphic account of how this elaborate fraud was crafted and how it not only deceived the general public, but Bill Clinton, Bill Gates, Barack Obama and a host of other astute and influential individuals as well. The audiobook also exposes how the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) was induced to become a key accomplice - and how it has broken the law and repeatedly lied in order to usher genetically engineered foods onto the market without the safety testing that's required by federal statute. As a result, for fifteen years America's families have been regularly ingesting a group of novel products that the FDA's own scientific staff had previously determined to be unduly hazardous to human health. By the time this gripping story comes to a close, it will be clear that the degradation of science it documents has not only been unsavory but unprecedented - and that in no other instance have so many scientists so seriously subverted the standards they were trained to uphold, misled so many people, and imposed such magnitude of risk on both human health and the health of the environment. ungekürzt. In October 2014, a group of mathematicians, physicists, ecologists, philosophers, and theologians gathered at a special conference in Berkeley, California, to present the results of a two-year research program dubbed “Project SATURN”. This program explored many of the rich avenues of thought found at the intersection of modern science and Christian theology. Chief among them is the possibility that certain processes in nature might be so complex that they do not have sufficient physical causes. Known as “ontological indeterminism”, this idea has profound implications for theology. Specifically, it allows God to be thought of as acting providentially within nature without violating the laws and processes of nature.Such a momentous insight could influence how we understand free will, natural evil, suffering in nature, and the relation between divine providence and human evolution. The essays collected here discuss each of these topics and were originally presented at the 2014 conference. Part I establishes the scientific basis for conceptualizing certain process in the universe as inherently random and possibly indeterministic. Part II discusses the philosophical and theological issues that spring from this understanding. Together they represent the cutting edge of thought in the increasingly productive dialogue between science and theology.Short for the “Scientific and Theological Understandings of Randomness in Nature”, Project SATURN was created by the Center for Theology and the Natural Sciences, a Program of the Graduate Theological Union, Berkeley. It was funded with a grant administered by Calvin College and provided by the John Templeton Foundation. The book is published by The Kent State University Press. The audiobook is published by University Press Audiobooks. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Timothy P Côté. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/acx0/213245/bk_acx0_213245_sample.mp3. And justice for all?Attorney Julius Phelps-Felton, a rising star in the Obama County State Attorney’s Office and author of The New York Times best seller Know Your Rights, is tragically killed in a police-involved shooting while trying to defend his fiancée, R&B musician Laura Mae, from being sexually violated by a police officer. The trauma from the incident sends Laura into a deep depression, eventually leading to her hospitalization and PTSD diagnosis.Despite Laura testifying that the officer responsible for the shooting was violating law enforcement policies, internal affairs and the Civilian Office of Police Accountability ruled the incident to be a justifiable police shooting. This series of unjust events challenges the American pledge to be “one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”And Justice for All? addresses some of the most critical questions facing Americans today: Is justice blind? Is it really an inalienable right for all? Dr. Kenneth D. Phelps, MDiv, DMinEntrepreneur, community leader, pastor, teacher, author, and playwrightDr. Kenneth D. Award-winning author, narrator, and screenwriter Neil Gaiman personally selected this book, and, using the tools of the Audiobook Creation Exchange (ACX), cast the narrator and produced this work for his audiobook label, Neil Gaiman Presents.A few words from Neil on Jurgen: Jurgen may be the most famous of James Branch Cabell’s books: It was certainly the one that put him on the map, when, in January 1920, the New York Society for the Prevention of Vice took his publisher to court for violating New York’s anti-obscenity law. Suddenly, Cabell went from an admired but semi-obscure author of literary satiric fantasy, to the guy everyone was reading because he was censored.James Branch Cabell's career was short-lived - his works fit neatly within the 1920s literary escapist culture and then quickly declined in popularity as the author veered away from the fantasy niche. In his heyday, Cabell garnered praise from several of his contemporaries such as H. L. Mencken and Sinclair Lewis. Lewis even acknowledged Cabell's successful Jurgen in his 1930 Nobel Prize address. Jurgen is certainly Cabell's most famous novel, published in 1919, and it tells the story of a middle-aged man on a journey through fantastic realms, where he meets and seduces beautiful women of fiction and myth - including the Devil's wife. The book garnered attention as it was charged with obscenity in a case that reached the New York Supreme Court. Cabell and his publisher won the case, and the author was deemed a literary avant garde, who tested conventional social boundaries and opposed the forces of puritanical repression. ungekürzt. The New York Times best-selling author and master of suspense delivers another novel at the crossroads of politics and medicine in this shocker of a thriller. On the night of the State of the Union address, President James Allaire expects to give the speech of his career. But no one anticipates the terrifying turn of events that forces him to quarantine everyone in the Capitol building. A terrorist group calling itself “Genesis” has unleashed WRX3883, a deadly, highly contagious virus, into the building. No one fully knows the deadly effect of the germ except for the team responsible for its development - a team headed by Allaire, himself. The only one who might be able to help is virologist Griffin Rhodes, currently in solitary confinement in a maximum security federal prison for alleged terrorist acts, including the attempted theft of WRX3883 from the lab where he worked. Rhodes has no idea why he has been arrested, but when Allaire offers to free him in exchange for his help combating the virus, he reluctantly agrees to do what he can to support the government that has imprisoned him without apparent cause. Meanwhile, every single person in line for presidential succession is trapped inside the Capitol - every person except one: the Director of Homeland Security, who is safely at home in Minnesota, having been selected as the “Designated Survivor” for this event. With enemies both named and unnamed closing in, and the security of the nation at stake, Griff must unravel the mysteries of WRX3883 without violating his pledge as a scientist to use no animal testing in his experiments...and time is running out. Tense, thrilling, and entirely plausible, A Heartbeat Away will make you reflect, wonder, and be truly afraid. ungekürzt. Although acceptance of difference is on the rise in America, it's the rare gay or lesbian person who has not been demeaned because of his or her sexual orientation, and this experience usually starts at home, among family members. Whether they are excluded from family love and approval, expected to accept second-class status for life, ignored by mainstream arts and entertainment, or abandoned when intervention would make all the difference, gay people are routinely subjected to forms of psychological and physical abuse unknown to many straight Americans. "Familial homophobia," as prizewinning writer and professor Sarah Schulman calls it, is a phenomenon that until now has not had a name but that is very much a part of life for the LGBT community. In the same way that Susan Brownmiller's Against Our Will transformed our understanding of rape by moving the stigma from the victim to the perpetrator, Schulman's Ties That Bind calls on us to recognize familial homophobia. She invites us to understand it not as a personal problem but a widespread cultural crisis. She challenges us to take up our responsibilities to intervene without violating families, community, and the state. With devastating examples, Schulman clarifies how abusive treatment of homosexuals at home enables abusive treatment of homosexuals in other relationships as well as in society at large. Ambitious, original, and deeply important, Schulman's book draws on her own experiences, her research, and her activism to probe this complex issue - still very much with us at the start of the twenty-first century - and to articulate a vision for a more accepting world. ungekürzt. William Tecumseh Sherman (February 8, 1820-February 14, 1891) holds a unique position in American history. Synonymous with barbarity in the South, Sherman is lauded as a war hero in the North, and modern historians consider him the harbinger of total war. As a General in the Union Army during the American Civil War (1861-65), Sherman was recognized for his outstanding command of military strategy but criticized for the harshness of the "scorched earth" policies that he implemented in conducting total war against the Confederate States, especially in 1864 and 1865. Military historian BH Liddell Hart famously declared that Sherman was "the first modern general". Sherman spent a majority of the war out west, although it is often forgotten that he was a brigade commander at the First Battle of Bull Run, and that the Civil War actually finished with General Joseph E. Johnston surrendering to Sherman weeks after Appomattox. By 1865, Sherman was the second most popular general in the North behind Grant, and history has accorded him a strong Civil War legacy. Nevertheless, Sherman remains controversial across much of the United States today. He was unquestionably instrumental at battles like Shiloh, his victory in the Atlanta Campaign reassured Lincoln's reelection, and his March to the Sea revolutionized total warfare. At the same time, the South considered him akin to a terrorist, violating the norms of warfare by targeting civilians, and accuse him of needlessly burning Atlanta and Columbia. In many ways, Sherman is still the scourge of the South, nearly 150 years after he vowed to make Georgia howl. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Colin Fluxman. As Jesus walked amongst men to advance the Gospel Truth, so does Arenos walk among men to advance an objective and secular standard of the good. Through numerous contacts, Arenos meets individuals and experiences situations that test existing systems of thought against an objective standard of the good. The objective standard Arenos speaks of contrasts with the religious and political imposition of those established. Arenos, at the behest of his father, the king, goes out into the world to learn how to be a proper ruler. The king, with Madgo, who will be Arenos' guide in the travels, set forth many rules by which to maintain a prosperous kingdom. However, the idyllic and idealistic youth quickly comes to disagreements with Madgo and the rules he and the king had established. While Madgo and the king had proscriptions and prescriptions for people to follow, Arenos advances people being open to the dictates of their hearts and minds, and the liberty to choose that course. On the roads, and in various towns, Madgo and Arenos meet numerous people, and attract many followers. One of whom is Peoh, who was being victimized by the brute Ryantt. After being inspired on how Arenos dealt with Ryantt in both word and deed, Peoh follows Arenos as he and Madgo argue as Madgo shows examples of how the rules set are just, while Arenos sees things differently and goes against, and gets the people to re-evaluate their prior beliefs, and Madgo's and the king's rules; where Madgo had punishments for violating rules of conduct, Arenos advances punishments only for harming another; where Madgo held that happiness through guidance was good-enough, Arenos advances happiness only being attainable through knowledge and achievement. Through Arenos' constant and open challenges to the laws, and with an ever-expanding following, Madgo asserts the rules of old. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Jared James.
