A book of poetry is like a selection of music on a CD, or pictures hanging on a wall in art gallery. It tells of things the writer has seen, understood or experienced. He is trying to share his discovery or inspiration. The hope is that the reader will enjoy what they read. At the same time, they may gain new thoughts and insights, which will stimulate or encourage them. Eventually, it may lead to new breadths of vision concerning the great themes of life, like reality, relationships and especially God our Creator and Father.

New illustrations by Tim Foley and a new foreword by author Robert Wheeler catapult this timeless classic by Ernest Hemingway into the twenty-first century with vigor. For nearly a century, The Sun Also Rises has endured as one of Hemingway's masterworks, and is widely regarded as a prime example of the great American writer's pioneering style and form. His first major novel explores powerful themes like masculinity and male insecurity, sex and love, and the effects of a brutal war on an aimless generation. This roman à clef is based on the real experiences and relationships Hemingway had in the early 1920s. Set predominantly in France and Spain, the novel follows a group of disillusioned aimless expats tooling around post-war Europe, living hard, drinking heavily, and having complicated sordid love affairs. The novel is told from the perspective of Jake Barnes, a World War I vet turned journalist living in Paris, who is still in love with his former flame, the eccentric and charismatic Lady Brett Ashley. Meanwhile, Jake's friend, author Robert Cohn, becomes tired of his oppressive marriage and sets off to seek out adventure, becoming enamored with Brett himself. They all eventually drift from the glitz and glamour of 1920s Paris to Pamplona, Spain, where they revel in the rawness of bullfights and alcohol-fueled parties, eventually devolving into jealousy and violent drama. This leads to Jake coming to a stark realization-that he can never be with the woman he truly loves.

This is the story of a young woman who as she matures, begins to explore the wonderful sensations her body is capable of creating, however, soon feeling guilty, she tells her mother. Being religious to a fault, her parents soon have Catherine fitted with, and imprisoned in a truly limiting Anti-Temptation System. Next, she is sent off to the local parochial school for young ladies where she discovers that she is not alone in being imprisoned within the restricting undergarments. Catherine remains a prisoner of her 'System' but is eventually freed and allowed to date. Her long-frustrated desires boil to the surface and she soon falls victim to the suddenly available world of sensual pleasure, but it's a trap. Far too soon Catherine is forced into becoming a Nun in the Sisterhood Of Eternal Penitence and once she is delivered to the Convent, she is rapidly absorbed into a life long commitment to Poverty, Obedience, Chastity, Discipline and Silence while always being kept subject to constant electronic control. This is not the end for Catherine though, for The Church has very definite plans for the young women it holds in captivity. Eventually, she finds herself removed from human status and reduced to the level of an owned dairy animal .... a role she will never be permitted to escape from and one that she will endure for the remainder of her life.

Based around the pivotal WWII battle of Stalingrad (1942-3), where the German advance into Russia was eventually halted by the Red Army, and around an extended family, the Shaposhnikovs, and their many friends and acquaintances, Life and Fate recounts the experience of characters caught up in an immense struggle between opposing armies and ideologies. Nazism and Communism are appallingly similar, 'two poles of one magnet', as a German camp commander tells a shocked old Bolshevik prisoner. At the height of the battle Russian soldiers and citizens alike are at last able to speak out as they choose, and without reprisal - an unexpected and short-lived moment of freedom. Grossman himself was on the front line as a war correspondent at Stalingrad - hence his gripping battle scenes, though these are more than matched by the drama of the individual conscience struggling against massive pressure to submit to the State. He knew all about this from experience too. His central character, Viktor Shtrum, eventually succumbs, but each delay and act of resistance is a moral victory. Though he writes unsparingly of war, terror and totalitarianism, Grossman also tells of the acts of 'senseless kindness' that redeem humanity, and his message remains one of hope. He dedicates his book, the labour of ten years, and which he did not live to see published, to his mother, who, like Viktor Shtrum's, was killed in the holocaust at Berdichev in Ukraine in September 1941.
