In The God Delusion, philosopher Richard Dawkins evaluates popular arguments for the existence of God. The idea that God is not an object that can be accessed and reviewed using human reason is rejected. Instead, evidence that proves with at least 51 percent certainty is presented to prove that God does, in fact, not exist, casting reasonable doubt on the efficacy and usefulness of belief in God. Genuine curiosity as disciplined by a sound scientific method is far more useful than religions. Religion is all too often based on superstition. An in-depth investigation of the intellectual bankruptcies of polytheism and monotheism, the secular beliefs of the Founding Fathers, and the Galton and Stannard prayer experiments underscore this idea. In contrast, the argument for natural selection shows it can account for the whole of human life, rather than the idea that there is one divine creator - a statement that in itself leads to more questions, such as the origins of that single creator.... Series 1 and 2 of the hilarious radio sitcom starring Harry H. Corbett and Wilfred Brambell, adapted from the much-loved TV series. Steptoe and Son ran for eight series on BBC TV and even spawned two feature films. Such was the series' popularity in the mid-1960s that the cast specially recorded several episodes for BBC radio. Here, collected together for the first time, are all 21 episodes from the first and second radio series, scripted by Hancock's Half Hour creators Ray Galton and Alan Simpson and adapted by Gale Pedrick. Among the classic comic incidents in these timeless episodes, Albert's 65th birthday turns into a disaster; Harold finds love with a French girl; Albert is upset by Harold's plans for a proper bathroom; and the duo get an irresistible offer. Plus, Albert and Harold's creditors arrive seeking payment; two coffins lead to a burst of superstition; Harold regrets taking Albert to the cinema; and Albert disrupts Harold's Labour Party meeting. The episodes included are 'The Offer'; 'The Bird'; 'Sixty-Five Today'; 'The Stepmother'; 'The Economist'; 'Wallah-Wallah Catsmeat'; 'The Diploma'; 'Steptoe à la Cart'; 'The Holiday'; 'The Bath'; 'The Lead Man Cometh'; 'A Musical Evening'; 'The Bonds That Bind Us'; 'The Siege of Steptoe Street'; 'Pilgrim's Progress'; 'The Wooden Overcoats'; 'Sunday for Seven Days'; 'The Piano'; 'My Old Man's a Tory'; 'Homes Fit for Heroes'; 'Crossed Swords'. Also included are two bonus features: a short 1966 Steptoe & Son sketch from The Ken Dodd Show and a selection of trailers prepared for overseas broadcast. Duration: 11 hours approx. When Joyce Kendall arrives in New York, fresh out of Clifton College in Iowa, she has a job and an apartment waiting for her. The job's as a first reader for Armageddon Publications. The apartment's at 21 Gay Street, and the small Federal-period house is already home to a lesbian couple, Jean Fitzgerald and Terri Leigh, and an out-of-work newspaperman, Pete Galton. The relationships of these four people under one roof add up to a fast-paced story that is not only satisfying fiction but a rare window on Bohemian life in the late 1950s. A drug-fueled rent-party-turned-orgy at the apartment of one Fred Koans is just link to a world some older fans may recall. Gay Street, in the heart of Greenwich Village, runs for only a single block between Christopher Street and Waverly Place. The 1943 movie A Night to Remember portrays 13 Gay Street as the address of the building where most of the action, including a murder, occurs. In 1996, Sheryl Crow made a video on Gay Street for the song "A Change Would Do You Good."21 Gay Street, a very early Lawrence Block novel, was originally published under the pen name Sheldon Lord. It was never reprinted after its initial publication in 1960, and this marks its first appearance in 56 years. As such, it seems an ideal choice to lead off Lawrence Block’s Collection of Classic Erotica, and the book's original cover, with a painting by the great Paul Rader, is reproduced here. ungekürzt. Named one of the “100 Notable Books of the Year” by the New York Times Book Review. From the widely celebrated New York Times best-selling author of Last Call - this “rigorously historical” (The Washington Post) and timely account of how the rise of eugenics helped America keep out “inferiors” in the 1920s is “a sobering, valuable contribution to discussions about immigration” (Booklist).A forgotten, dark chapter of American history with implications for the current day, The Guarded Gate tells the story of the scientists who argued that certain nationalities were inherently inferior, providing the intellectual justification for the harshest immigration law in American history. Brandished by the upper-class Bostonians and New Yorkers - many of them progressives - who led the anti-immigration movement, the eugenic arguments helped keep hundreds of thousands of Jews, Italians, and other unwanted groups out of the US for more than 40 years.Over five years in the writing, The Guarded Gate tells the complete story from its beginning in 1895, when Henry Cabot Lodge and other Boston Brahmins launched their anti-immigrant campaign. In 1921, Vice President Calvin Coolidge declared that “biological laws” had proven the inferiority of Southern and Eastern Europeans; the restrictive law was enacted three years later. In his trademark lively and authoritative style, Okrent brings to life the rich cast of characters from this time, including Lodge’s closest friend, Theodore Roosevelt; Charles Darwin’s first cousin, Francis Galton, the idiosyncratic polymath who gave life to eugenics; the fabulously wealthy and profoundly bigoted Madison Grant, founder of the Bronx Zoo, and his best friend, H. Fairfield Osborn, director of the American Museum of Natural History; Margaret Sanger, who saw eugenics as a sensibl ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Daniel Okrent. The Science of Sherlock Holmes is a wild ride in a hansom cab along the road paved by Sherlock Holmes—a ride that leads us through medicine, law, pathology, toxicology, anatomy, blood chemistry, and the emergence of real-life forensic science during the 19th and 20th centuries. From the "well-marked print of a thumb" on a whitewashed wall in "The Adventure of the Norwood Builder" to the trajectory and impact of a bullet in "The Reigate Squires", author E. J. Wagner uses the Great Detective's remarkable adventures as springboards into the real-life forensics behind them. You'll meet scientists, investigators, and medical experts, such as the larger-than-life Eugène Vidocq of the Paris Sûreté, the determined detective Henry Goddard of London's Bow Street Runners, the fingerprint expert Sir Francis Galton, and the brilliant but arrogant pathologist Sir Bernard Spilsbury. You'll explore the ancient myths and bizarre folklore that were challenged by the evolving field of forensics and examine the role that brain fever, Black Dogs, and vampires played in criminal history. Real-life Holmesian mysteries abound throughout the book. What happened to Dr. George Parkman, wealthy physician and philanthropist, last seen entering the Harvard College of Medicine in 1849? The trial included some of the first expert testimony on handwriting analysis on record—some of it foreshadowing what Holmes said of printed evidence years later in The Hound of the Baskervilles, "But this is my special hobby, and the differences are equally obvious." Through numerous cases, including celebrated ones such as those of Jack the Ripper and Lizzie Borden, the author traces the influence of the coolly analytical Holmes on the gradual emergence of forensic science from the grip of superstition. You'll find yourself listening to The Science of Sherlock Holmes as eagerly as you would those of any Holmes mystery. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: E. J. Wagner, Simon Prebble. Mit Arbeiten von: Herbert Achternbusch, Akatre, Atelier Formes Vives, Alice Attie, Honoré de Balzac, François-Marie Banier, Peter Bankov, Fiona Banner, Martine Bertrand, Joseph Beuys, Mila Blau, Anthony Braxton, August von Briesen, Nancy Burr, John Cage, Rebecca Chew, Allesandro De Francesco, Mirtha Dermisache, Christian Dotremont, Eva Dranaz, Michael Dumontier, Heinz Edelmann, Gia Edzgveradze, Neil Farber, Ed Fella, Martin Galton, Yvonne Gargano, Pierre Garnier, Marco Giovenale, Anselm Glück, Grapus, Jon Gray, Christoph Grünberger, Florian und Romano Hänni, Patrick Hartl, Romuald Hengstler, Fons Hickmann, Christian Hundertmark C100, Paul Klee, Peter Krüll, L2M3 Ina Bauer & Sascha Lobe, Gabriel Lalonde, Miriam Londoño, Martino&Jaña, Stefan Marx, Marcello Mercado, Saed Meshki, Joan Miró, Maryam Motallebzadeh, Rudolf Mumprecht, John Bunion Murray, Hiroko Nakajima, Emilio Nanni, Nous Travaillons Ensemble, Hans Ulrich Obrist, JonOne, Yoko Ono, Roman Opalka, Dennis Orel, Peng Peng Klaus Fromherz & Martin Geel mit Gelinda Paganini, Pablo Picasso, Olaf Probst, Guillaume Adjutor Provost, Robert Rauschenberg, Nicholas Rougeux, Gerhard Rühm, SagmeisterWalsh, Yuichi Saito, Stefan Sandner, Shoshu, Manita Songserm, Susann Stefanizen, Strichpunkt Design, Antoni Tàpies, Meliha Teparic, Jean Tinguely, Henryk Tomaszewski, Jouri Toreev, Damien Tran, Niklaus Troxler, Cy Twombly, Ben Vautier, James Victore, Vier5, Robert Walser, Andy Warhol, Jan Willem Welzenis, Daniel Wiesmann, Adolf Wölfli, Barbara Wojirsch, Guoqin Zhu, Zwölf Stefan Guzy & Björn Wied
