Agitations: Ideologies and Strategies in African American Politics , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 492min
Though the activities of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), and the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) were unified in their common idea of resistance to oppression, these groups fought their battles on multiple fronts. The NAACP filed lawsuits and aggressively lobbied Congress and state legislatures, while Martin Luther King Jr., and SCLC challenged the racial status quo through nonviolent mass action, and the SNCC focused on community empowerment activities. In Agitations, Kevin Anderson studies these various activities in order to trace the ideological foundations of these groups and to understand how diversity among African Americans created multiple political strategies. Agitations goes beyond the traditionally acknowledged divide between integrationist and accommodationist wings of African-American politics to explore the diverse fundamental ideologies and strategic outcomes among African-American activists that still define, influence, and complicate political life today. ungekürzt. Moses & Son: Pioneers of Frontier Florida , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 235min
Florida, now America's third most populous state, was a remote, under-populated wilderness in the early 19th century. Two men, father and son, were major players in the state's development and eventual statehood. Yet their roles were vastly different and they achieved prominence in totally divergent ways. Despite their achievements they remain mostly forgotten today. Moses Elias Levy, a businessman and developer, bought thousands of acres of Florida land from Spanish grantees and established "Pilgrimage", intended as a homeland for displaced Jews. He proposed America's first school for Jewish children and relentlessly advocated for Judaism (as well as the abolition of slavery). His son, David Levy Yulee became a lawyer, politician, territorial delegate to Congress and ultimately, one of Florida's first two Senators. He lobbied for Florida's admission to the Union in 1845. He was the stubborn builder of Florida's first cross-state railroad at a time when there were virtually no roads. This is a history of Frontier Florida, a story of religion and politics, slavery and the Civil War, and a glimpse into relationships of fathers and sons. ungekürzt. Language: English. The Case Against Sugar
More than half a billion adults and 40 million children on the planet are obese. Diabetes is a worldwide epidemic. Evidence increasingly shows that these illnesses are linked to the other major Western diseases: hypertension, heart disease, even Alzheimer's and cancer, and that shockingly, sugar is likely the single root cause. Yet the nutritional advice we receive from public health bodies is muddled, out of date, and frequently contradictory, and in many quarters still promotes the unproven hypothesis that fats are the greatest evil. With expert science and compelling storytelling, Gary Taubes investigates the history of nutritional science which, shaped by a handful of charismatic and misguided individuals, has for a hundred years denied the impact of sugar on our health. He exposes the powerful influence of the food industry which has lobbied for sugar's ubiquity - the Sugar Association even today promoting 'sugar's goodness' - and the extent that the industry has corrupted essential scientific research. He delves into the science of sugar, exposes conventional thinking that sugar is 'empty calories' as a myth, and finds that its addictive pleasures are resulting in worldwide consumption as never experienced before, to devastating effect. The Case Against Sugar is a revelatory read, which will fundamentally change the way we eat.- Shop: buecher

Emperor: The American Fathers, Episode 4 , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 182min
In 2012, no one saw Victor Daco coming. In 2024, he lobbied Congress to turn America's 13 most powerful conglomerates into sovereign regional states, transforming the control that corporations had held for decades over the US government into a formal nobility. Once the bill was signed into law, it became known as the New Rule. As the wealthiest man in the country, Victor became the most powerful patriarch. Resistance to the New Rule grew steadily, so by 2032, Victor had created an army to confront it. He dubbed his anti-terrorist force The Fathers. To legally operate drones and transport troops within the United States, Victor began negotiating the terms of an aviation bill with the patriarchs of Second, Third, and Fourth House. Will the other three patriarchs grant Victor the authority to execute American citizens with impunity and assume ultimate power? What about the other seven patriarchs? Can Victor handle resistance from another noble house while he attempts to make his crackdown on average citizens legal? Emperor is the fourth episode of The American Fathers serial. Thomas Ewing Jr.: Frontier Lawyer and Civil War General : Shades of Blue and Gray, Book 1 , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 969min
An Ohio family with roots in the South, the Ewings influenced the course of the Midwest for more than 50 years. Patriarch Thomas Ewing, a former Whig senator and cabinet member who made his fortune as a real estate lawyer, raised four major players in the nation’s history - including William Tecumseh “Cump” Sherman, taken into the family as a nine-year-old, who went on to marry his foster sister Ellen. Ronald D. Smith now tells of this extraordinary clan that played a role on the national stage through the illustrious career of one of its sons.He describes the seat-of-the-pants law practice in which Thomas Ewing Jr. worked with his brothers Hugh and Charlie and foster brother Cump. He then tells how Tom came to national prominence in the fight over the proslavery Lecompton Constitution, was instrumental in starting up the Union Pacific Railroad, and became the first chief justice of the Kansas Supreme Court.Ewing obtained a commission in the Union Army - as did his brothers - and raised a regiment that saw significant action in Arkansas and Missouri. After William Quantrill’s raid on Lawrence, Kansas, he issued the dramatic General Order No. 11 that expelled residents from sections of western Missouri. Then this confidant of Abraham Lincoln’s went on to courageously defend three of the assassination conspirators - including the disingenuous Samuel Mudd - and lobbied the key vote to block the impeachment of Andrew Johnson. This book fills the gaps in an interlocking family of remarkable people - one that helped shape a nation’s development in its courtrooms and business suites. The book is published by University of Missouri Press. The Horse Lover: A Cowboy's Quest to Save the Wild Mustangs , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 457min
Winner of Will Rogers Medallion Award.Finalist, High Plains Book Award. He already owned and managed two ranches and needed a third about as much as he needed a permanent migraine. That's what Alan Day said every time his friend pestered him about an old ranch in South Dakota. But in short order, he proudly owned 35,000 pristine grassy acres. The opportunity then dropped into his lap to establish a sanctuary for unadoptable wild horses previously warehoused by the Bureau of Land Management. After Day successfully lobbied Congress, those acres became Mustang Meadows Ranch, the first government-sponsored wild horse sanctuary established in the United States. The Horse Lover is Day's personal history of the sanctuary's vast enterprise, with its surprises and pleasures and its plentiful dangers, frustrations, and heartbreak. Day's deep connection with the animals in his care is clear from the outset as is his maverick philosophy of horse-whispering, with which he trained 1,500 wild horses. The Horse Lover weaves together Day's recollections of his cowboy adventures astride some of his best horses, all of which taught him indispensable lessons about loyalty, perseverance, and hope. This heartfelt memoir reveals the Herculean task of balancing the requirements of the government with the needs of wild horses. The book is published by University of Nebraska Press. The audiobook is published by University Press Audiobooks.Praise for The Horse Lover:"An instant classic."
