  Natürlich fragt man sich, warum das wohl so lange gedauert hat. Wenn seit dem letzten Album ganze 12 Jahre vergangen sind, würde man naturgemäß große Veränderungen erwarten. Auch die Tatsache, dass die Aufnahmen für das neue Album fünf Jahre gedauert haben, führen unweigerlich zu der Annahme, dass sich irgendetwas grundsätzlich geändert haben muss. Aufregende Produktionen, namhafte Gastmusiker.Aber wir können beruhigt aufatmen: nichts dergleichen stimmt. Peace of Love, Kings of Convenience? viertes Studioalbum klingt so frisch wie eh und je: 11 Songs über das Leben, die Liebe und die Schönheit, die uns umgibt. Und das in genau der unverwechselbaren Klarheit die wir von den Kings of Convenience erwarten würden. Der Grund dafür mag sein, dass Eirik Glambek Bøe und Erlend Øye die Kings of Convenience noch nie als ein Geschäftsmodell gesehen haben und folglich auch weder in der Vergangenheit noch heute den gängigen Automatismen der Branche unterliegen.?It seems like a comeback, of course, but it doesn?t feel like a comeback,? sagt Eirik. ?It?s been a very slow-burning project. We?ve fooled ourselves many times into thinking that now we know how to make records but the moment we?re in the studio we realise that recordings are really about capturing magic. It?s very, very hard to make something sound simple.??We have two completely different ideas of how to live life,? stimmt Erlend zu. ?That?s what makes it difficult. If we were both nomads or both family men, it would be much easier. But we?re still together!?Erlend hat vor etwa acht Jahren Siracusa in Sizilien zu seiner Wahlheimat erkoren, während Eirik in Bergen geblieben ist. Aber auch trotz dieser Distanz hat man sich nie lange aus den Augen verloren.Die Songs für Peace or Love sind eigentlich bereits seit 2016 fertig ? doch wurden die Dinge unerwartet kompliziert. Auch das gibt es im Universum der Kings of Convenience, auch wenn ihre Musik das nicht unbedingt vermuten lässt.?We recorded the album about five times,? berichtet Eirik. ?A song has to be played with a certain ease yet everything needs to be right. It has to sound like we are enjoying ourselves and also communicating an emotional presence. To get all those qualities in one take is very hard.?Die ersten Versuche klangen zwar frisch und authentisch ? aber auch unvollständig. Und je mehr die beiden an den Songs arbeiteten, umso mehr verlor sich der ursprüngliche Charakter der Ideen. Eine Pause musste her.?We are chasing a moment that is inspired and rehearsed at the same time,? sagt Erlend. ?We?re trying to find that sweet spot.?Hinzu kamen, dass beide zwischen den Aufnahme-Sessions ihre zahlreichen anderen Projekte weiterführten. Auch das ist ein Grund, warum es für die Kings of Convenience so lange gedauert hat.Und während die Aufnahmen zu Peace or Love voranschritten, hatten dann doch auch andere Musiker Anteil an dem Aufnahmeprozess.Alexander Grieg beispielsweise, Ur-Enkel des Komponisten Edvard Grieg spielt Kontrabass ? aufgenommen im Haus seines Großvaters in Bergen.Love Is A Lonely Thing wurde in Nils Frahm?s Studio im Funkhaus in Berlin aufgenommen. Diesem, und den von dem britischen Folk Trio The Staves geschriebenen Song Catholic Country, lieh einmal mehr die großartige Feist ihre Stimme.Weitere Songs entstanden in Siracusa und Göteborg.Den Kern von Peace or Love aber bilden weiterhin die unverwechselbaren Stimmen und Akustik-Gitarren der Kings of Convenience. Eirik vergleicht diese Reduzierung auf das wesentliche mit dänischen Dogma-Filmen:?Modern life is so full of options. You can go anywhere. By limiting the means we can use, paradoxically it creates a sense of freedom.?Innerhalb dieses Rahmens verarbeiten die beiden ihre rhythmischen und melodischen Inspirationen aus der Welt des Jazz, brasilianischer Musik oder sogar House.Der Name Peace or Love ? der Idee eines Freundes entliehen ? führt die Tradition vermeintlich paradoxer Album-Titel fort.?We?re so used to the expression ?peace and love? but at some point you have to ask yourself, ?Can I have both??? erzählt Eirik. ?And the truth is: probably not. It?s an autobiographical album. It?s a summary of the difficulties we have been facing in our lives in the last eight years.?Die 11 Songs auf Peace or Love besitzen eine emotionale Tiefe und Erkenntnisse, die nur durch das Älterwerden gewonnen werden können. Erlend hat seit dem letzten Album beide Elternteile verloren. Kürzlich ist er eine ernsthafte Beziehung eingegangen während Eiriks 21-Jahre andauernde Ehe ein Ende fand.
