This memoir and biography unfolds the inspiring internal and external spiritual odyssey of Yamuna Devi's devotional life recalled in her memories, talks, journals, and writings, as well as the remembrances of the author and other associates and friends. It is supplemented with relevant music and live recordings of Yamuna Devi, some of which have never been heard before, which complements the text of the book. In Part One, Yamuna Devi meets her spiritual preceptor, Srila Prabhupada, at her sister's wedding in 1966 and begins her first tentative steps in Bhakti. In San Francisco she and a group of friends establish a vibrant temple and celebrate Rathayatra. Yamuna is initiated, married, and begins cooking for Srila Prabhupada. She, her husband, and two other couples then travel to London and ignite the fire of Sankirtan in England. She records with George Harrison at Apple Studios and helps establish a temple in London. Her Guru's promise to take her to India is fulfilled in 1970, when she travels with the World Sankirtan Party throughout India. Despite hardships and obstacles along the path, the seed of Yamuna Devi's Bhakti grows and matures into a life of unalloyed devotion. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Dinatarini Devi. This audiobook probes institutional life through nine fascinating profiles. In the words of its author: "The unalloyed truth is that I'm in thrall to idiosyncrasy. It possibly could be said that I actually love pathology. Well, let me explain: It's that I love to be near it, to see it, to observe it with a clinical eye. I feel strongly sympathetic toward people who are severely and emotionally and psychologically ill. I see pathology as an expressionist and Cubist rendition of reality." You will not soon forget these nine stories or how Dr. Kellerman deals with the delusional, the unusual, and the strange, in a modern setting. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Tom Pile. This may be the most charming book I’ve read all year. (The New York Times)   "I don’t know when I last read a book with such pure and unalloyed pleasure." (Philip Pullman, internationally best-selling author of the His Dark Materials series)   Winner of the Mildred L. Batchelder Award, this is a captivating story about dark truths and heinous crimes as well as unexpected friendships. Perfect for fans of Brian Selznick and mystery and detective stories. Sally Jones is not only a loyal friend, she's an extraordinary individual. In overalls or in a maharaja's turban, this unique gorilla moves among humans without speaking but understanding everything. She and the Chief are devoted comrades who operate a cargo boat. A job they are offered pays big bucks, but the deal ends badly, and the Chief is falsely convicted of murder. For Sally Jones this is the start of a harrowing quest for survival and to clear the Chief's name. Powerful forces are working against her, and they will do anything to protect their secrets.  ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Kimberly Farr. This memoir and biography unfolds the inspiring internal and external spiritual odyssey of Yamuna Devi's devotional life recalled in her memories, talks, journals, and writings as well as the remembrances of the author and other associates and friends. It is supplemented with relevant complimentary music and narrative featuring Yamuna. In part two, Yamuna faces challenges and austerities while serving in Vrindavan. In 1974 she leaves the Krishna-Balarama Temple project and moves to Oregon with Dinatarini to begin a women's ashram. Her beloved deities are installed there. In the ensuing years, Yamuna and Dinatarini move extensively, each move bringing its own challenges and inspirations. In 1984 Yamuna's epic cookbook, Lord Krishna's Cuisine: The Art of Indian Vegetarian Cooking, is released to unprecedented praise. In 1998 Yamuna and Dinatarini, seeking a simpler life, move to Saranagati Village to live off the grid in a self-built Vastu-designed home. Here Yamuna lovingly shares kirtan, classes, deity seva, and devotional inspiration. Health issues later force Yamuna to move to Florida, where she continues to inspire others in bhakti until her passing. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Dinatarini Devi. I have spent a goodly part of my life in study and research. During the last 30 years, I have read every single piece of literature on the subject of spiritualism that I could. I have accumulated one of the largest libraries in the world on psychic phenomena, spiritualism, magic, witchcraft, demonology, evil spirits, etc - some of the material going back as far as 1489. And I doubt if any one in the world has so complete a library on modern spiritualism, but nothing I ever read concerning the so-called spiritualistic phenomena has impressed me as being genuine. It is true that some of the things I read seemed mystifying, but I question if they would be were they to be reproduced under different circumstances, under test conditions, and before expert mystifiers and open-minded committees. Mine has not been an investigation of a few days or weeks or months, but one that has extended over 30 years and in that time, I have not found one incident that savored of the genuine. If there had been any real unalloyed demonstration to work on - one that did not reek of fraud, one that could not be reproduced by earthly powers - then there would be something for a foundation, but up to the present time, everything that I have investigated has been the result of deluded brains or those which were too actively and intensely willing to believe. Born and raised at Four Corners, their parents' thoroughbred horse farm in Kentucky, Charlotte and Knox grew up steeped in the rhythms of foaling season - the cyclical revolution of life and growth and change that transformed generations of foals into yearlings every January. Knox and Charlotte are as tightly connected - and as mysterious to each other - as two sisters ever were. When Charlotte leaves Four Corners Farm, and marries Bruce, a New Yorker, moving to Manhattan's West Village, their lives remain powerfully entwined. But nothing will solder their lives more deeply or fatefully than Charlotte's pregnancy, and the fateful day on which she delivers two glorious twin boys, and then dies in childbirth. For Knox and Bruce, near strangers both devastated by the loss of Charlotte, the woman who connects them to each other more deeply in death than she ever did in life, the vast, inscrutable calculus of their grief is initially subsumed by the relentless waves of obligation and exhaustion which take hold almost at the instant of Charlotte's death: Together they take up the work of caring for her two motherless boys. In their mourning, and in the joy and desolation that flood in as their love for the children deepens, Bruce and Knox confront the deepest paradoxes of grief and regeneration, questions of loyalty and unalloyed longing, and the entanglement of families and generations. A gripping, powerfully affecting debut novel from a stunning new writer. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Becca Battoe.
